We ordered these lamb shanks in our most recent truLOCAL box and had to try them with honey. They were delicious!!
If you haven’t tried truLOCAL yet, you should. They offer monthly delivery of local meat right to your door. You can customize your box to add whatever meat you like that month. It is great for trying things you normally wouldn’t – like these lamb shanks!
Now back to the lamb – don’t be intimidated if this is something you’ve never cooked before. It was so simple to make and the flavour was perfect. The orange, cinnamon, and honey really elevate this dish without being overpowering.
What do you serve with lamb shanks?
Lamb is complemented nicely by green vegetables and potatoes. We served ours with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and honey roasted acorn squash. It was delicious!
As for sauce for the lamb, we recommend serving it with mint jelly. This is most common and the combination is great together.
Ingredients
2 lamb shanks from truLOCAL
2 tbsp. olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 cups beef broth
1/3 cup Peace River Honey
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 oranges, peeled and sliced into 1/2 inch slices
1/2 large onion, quartered
4 garlic cloves
Salt
Pepper
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
In a large cast iron skillet, over medium-high heat, brown the shanks in olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and transfer to a plate.
Drain the fat from the cast iron skillet and return to stove top on medium heat. Add vinegar and cook until you reduce the vinegar by half. Add the beef broth, Peace River Honey, and cinnamon to the skillet. Bring to a boil.
Turn off heat to cast iron. Add oranges, garlic, and onions. Add lamb back to skillet. Place the whole skillet into preheated oven.
Cook for 1 hour, basting regularly. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
